this is fox 5 news at 10:00. >> tonight on fox 5, judgment day for jerry sandusky. the convicted child molester learns his fate. >> plus, d.c. hours away from hosting its first playoff baseball game since 1933. the nats getting ready for a

pivotal game. and more than 100 organizations go together. how the transit agency is responding. >> we are going to start off with jerry sandusky's sentencing, three months after he was convicted of 45 counts of child sex abuse. the former penn state football coach learned he will likely die in prison after a judge sentenced him to 30 years behind bars. will thomas starts us off with his fate. >> you know, he knows he lost his freedom and essentially got a life sentence given his age. we don't know yet where sandusky will serve his time. it's going to be evaluated and tested and moved to his new permanent home behind bars. as you'll see after the convictions, all the victims that came forward, sandusky still says he lost in court to speck youlation. >> convicted pedophile, jerry sandusky, left the courthouse facing the next three decades behind bars. the 68-year-old will do at least 30 years in prison.

>> obviously it's still a life sentence, but it was less than we thought it could have been. we are busy drafting our appeals right now. >> jerry never flinched from his position that he was innocent and that he wanted the opportunity to prove his innocence. >> sandusky is speaking before the sentence, once again denied any wrong doing. and ahead of his sentencing, he read an audio statement from his jail cell. >> they can take away my life. they can make me out as a monster. they can treat me as a monster. they can't take away my heart. in my heart, i know i did not do these alleged, disgusting acts. >> the prosecution has no sympathy for sandusky, calling his statements masterpieces of self-delusion. >> completely untethered from reality. without any acceptance of reality. in short, ridiculous. >> several victimgave impact statements during sentencing. they described how the

traumatic experience changed them. some of the attacks happened inside the penn state facilities. the university president released a statement after the sentence. saying quote, while today's sentence cannot erase what has happened, hopefully, it will provide comfort to those affected by these horrible events. >> at least four young men are now suing penn state over the way the university responded to complaints about sandusky. and we're told more lawsuits are on the way. the school recently announced an effort to settle as many claims as possible by the end of the year. so shawn, this one not over yet. >> will thomas, thank you. another big story tonight, a monumental moment in the nation's capital. tomorrow, d.c. hosts its first playoff game in 79 years. fox 5's scott myth is here. is this a pivotal game for the nationals? >> it's fair to say that. it's been 79 years almost to the day. october 7, 1933, it was a 4-3

calling in. but when brown offered reasons why he didn't think he was violating the rules, leon continued to scold him. then ordered brown to check in with court officials in person each week. no longer by phone, and then added an overnight home curfew from 11:00 p.m. until 6:30 in the morning. >> that's all i could say. >> few words outside court from brown's attorney, fred cook. brown is just about a month away from being sentenced for bank fraud. and cook thinks his client now understands what to do before then. >> i think, you know, he has a clear understanding of what is in front of him. you know, so he's going to do what he needs to do. >> it's not the best idea to upset judge leon. he will be the one that sentences brown next month. he told brown in court today that he didn't want to see him back in front of him until that

a medical examiner says sarah greenhall was shot in the neck back in july. her body found in her burning home in upperville. so far, no arrests in her death. greenhall worked for the winchester star. a prince georges county sheriff deputy facing a $15 million lawsuit. he was accused of raping an inmate last summer. now the woman's lawyer says the deputy took pictures of her naked inside a holding cell. fox 5's paul wagner has the story. >> on june 19 of this year, precious reaves was locked up on a theft charge and scheduled to go before a judge in this upper marlboro courthouse. but according to police, she was escorted to a holding cell where she was ordered to disrobe by uniformed deputy. although fox 5 does not identify sex assault victims, reaves, through her attorney, decided ed to go public. the deputy took breaks during the assault to attend to his job. >> his walkie talkie went off.

he said stay naked, i'll be right back. goes outside the cell, comes back, and begins to have sex with her again. >> his client felt she had no choice but do what the deputy said. >> she didn't see other guards. all she heard was someone calling on the radio. he told her not to put her clothes back on and he would be back. she didn't see any of the guards. >> the deputy was armed with a handgun when he escorted reaves into the holding cell, which was out of site for courthouse surveillance cameras. >> he started making comments towards her, about her abilities, things you would hear in a rated x movie. >> online court records show reaves remained locked up. deputy mcintyre was released on a $50,000 bond. mcintyre is facing a child on rape and sexual assault

charges. as for the civil lawsuit, the deputy is named as a defendant as well as the state of maryland. as for precious reaves, she wanted to go public in hopes of helping other sex assault victims. in the fox 5 newsroom, i'm paul wagner. tsa agents found a loaded gun at reagan national airport and tonight, the passenger is facing charges. agents spotted this handgun. the airport authority took the gun, charged the man with a misdemeanor weapons charge. the passenger was allowed to continue on to a flight to dallas. >> what do you do if you are riding a school bus and your driver passes out. happened to some clarksburg high school students. thanks to quick thinking, one of the students, everybody is okay. after the driver lost control of the bus. fox 5's karen gray houston has the story. >> high school students take the bus to school early. it was about 6:40 a.m. friday when 17-year-old, dustin

mitchem was on a bus and got a frightening jolt. he had been listening to music on his ipod. several other students had just good night on the bus. >> bus driver stopped abruptly and his head slumped down. >> they had been traveling when the bus driver had some kind of medical emergency. dustin rushed up front and tried to shake the driver awake. >> then, i picked up the bus radio and i radioed to them, you know, saying my bus driver blacked out, we need help. >> you can still see the bus tire tracks on the front lawn where the bus came to a halt. >> i got up and looked out my window. i saw a bus and flashing lights coming from everywhere. >> what were you thinking was happening? >> i thought the bus had a flat tire. >> saw the whole thing. >> came 10, 15 feet from hitting a pole. >> principal says the school is proud of how the students handled the emergency.

siberian cub. critics wonder, just like alligator attractions that came under fire for their swim parties, are big cats and kids an appropriate pairing? >> with an animal, there's always a risk. you are in there with at least one of the trainers in the water with you. >> president and head trainer, randy stern, says tigers are natural swimmers with webbing between their toes. there are no laws regulating swimming with tigers. >> they are very strong, but also very well trained. that's why a lot of those don't let you interact because they don't have the staff or knowledge to do it. >> to his knowledge, he has the only place in the u.s. you can do this. >> tigers by state law, like tony here, can be with the public until they are 40- pounds. >> that's with a leash. state law says it's okay for big cats 25-pounds or less to be handled with only a trainer's restraint. a trainer must be present.
